Kalmia Sheep Laurel aka lambkill, sheepkill, wicky, dwarf laurel, and pig laurel is an underappreciated smaller-growing laurel of the northeast. It occurs in boggy areas, in vast understory thickets in the pine barrens, and along mountain ridges. The flowers occur in rounded clusters and the leaves are flat usually light bluish green and hairy. Plants are low, usually around 2 feet at matu- rity. The many names are a reference to the fact that it is poisonous to grazing animals and may be shunned by deer, although we cannot vouch for that. Some cultivars make good garden subjects for the small garden.
